Tips for Hosting Events

Last weekend, I hosted a lingerie shower for Theresa, of Z'Tejas Ancho Chili Fudge Pie fame. We all had such a great time, so I wanted to share some tips with you that made it an easy and fun experience for all.

Rick Bayless made a comment on the Top Chef Masters finale that he was really hoping to be able to keep Betty because she would be able to decorate the table. While I'm sure Betty would have been helpful in the kitchen too, he had a point. When you have a stationery food display, presentation is key. I got 3 yards of shiny pink fabric from Hobby Lobby (on sale for $2.99 a yard!) and bunched it all over the table. I used boxes as risers and lifted some of the platters up, giving the display a more dimensional feel. And fresh flowers are always a great way to spruce up a display.

Don't worry, the empty platters will be filled with hot food momentarily. And this isn't my house. I don't have one of those ugly metal paper towel dispensers in my kitchen!

You can sort of see the TV on in the background. Use the music channels (I think they're pretty common in most cable packages) for mood music!

I used a few cardboard cake rounds, a paper towel cardboard tube, some leftover paper from the invitations, some pink ribbon, and craft glue to make a festive cupcake display. It was really easy and well worth the small effort to bring in the theme a bit more.

Don't forget to tell people what they're eating! You can see the folded cards I used in the picture above.

Next -- think about how you can carry through the theme of the party in your menu, either subtly or not so much.

Chocolate-dipped frozen bananas with chopped walnuts!

I'll share some of the other menu items we had in a few upcoming posts.

Champagne always makes a party, and Theresa and I both love champagne cocktails. But champagne can get pricey. If you're mixing champagne cocktails, try a prosecco or a cava for a more wallet-friendly solution. We used Crystalino Brut Cava.

I renamed the cocktails to fit the theme, including the Blushing Bride and Fancy Panties, and spelled them out clearly on a menu, which guests used as a guide for mixing their own.

The decanters came from a local restaurant supply store. They were so much cheaper than others I had found ($2.50, compared to $15 at Target).

Lastly, have fun and plan your day so that you're not frazzled by party time. A stressed host makes for stressed guests.

Our very own blushing bride. Hope you had a blast, Theresa!

Becca, everything was absolutely wonderful, the food, the drink, and of course, the company.
You know how to throw a great event. Pam was very impressed with your hosting skills, plus Megan's too as we know she co-hosted.
Well done to you both.
