I've never actually made bread before, so this was a new (great!) experience for me. I love it! It's fun. And who doesn't like hot dinner rolls?
Ingredients:
- 1/2 c. water
- 1/2 c. milk
- 1/3 c. white sugar
- 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
- 1 egg
- 1/3 c. butter, softened
- 1 tsp. salt
- 3 and 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
Directions:
- Place water and milk in microwave safe bowl and microwave until the liquids are warm (~110 degrees).
- Pour the water and milk mixture into the bowl of a mixer; add sugar and stir to dissolve.
- Add yeast and let sit for 10-20 minutes to proof (get foamy).
- Attach the bowl to the mixer and stir on low speed. Add the salt, butter and egg until mixed thoroughly.
- Add in the flour, 1/4 cup at a time.
- Remove the paddle attachment and attach the dough hook. Knead the dough in the mixer for 5-10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
- Remove the dough from the bowl and shape into rolls.
- Cover with a clean towel and let rise in a warm place for an hour. (Since we still have our A/C on and it's hard to find a warm spot in the house, I put them on top of my dryer and ran it for a while.)
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees and bake the rolls for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown.
Verdict:
These were pretty good! I thought they would come out a little sweeter, but that's okay because they're dinner rolls and they aren't really supposed to be sweet. The original recipe also called for brushing the top with butter before and after baking, but I wanted to cut down on the butter intake, so I omitted this. I think it was fine without. I thought bread-making took forever and needed mad skillz, but this recipe proved me wrong.
